There are so many reasons for elder abuse, neglect, and abandonment. In some developing countries, older widows are abandoned, and their property seized. In other places, they often accuse older widows of witchcraft if there is an unexplained death or crop failure in the community. The stress level of caregivers is seen as a risk factor in elder abuse. Some other factors include lack of respect and value by the younger generation, the intensity of disease or dementia progression, and young couples relocating to populated areas, leaving elderly parents in deteriorating rural homesteads.  When elderly people live in poverty, without the basic necessities of life and without family support, their risk of abuse, neglect and exploitation increases.
