Have you ever wondered what God’s design for longevity is? When I arrived in Okinawa, Japan, one of the world’s Blue Zones, I came looking for answers to longevity. What I found was something far deeper: A reflection of God’s original design for life. I met Dr. Suzuki, a renowned expert on aging, who said, “Longevity is not something you chase; it is something that follows when you live with ikigai – defined as a reason for being.”
As he spoke, I couldn’t help but hear a biblical echo in his words. Ikigai, the Japanese concept of “a reason for being,” mirrors what Scripture teaches as living in God’s purpose. Ephesians 2:10 reminds us, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

In Okinawa, People rise each day with purpose; they tend a garden, teach a child, cook for a friend, or simply bless their neighbors. Their lives aren’t driven by productivity but by meaning. That’s exactly how God calls us to live – not striving, but serving; not existing, but abiding.

Everywhere I turned, I saw biblical principles woven into daily life:
- They eat the foods God created, such as plants, grains, and fish. They stop eating when they’re satisfied, not stuffed. This “80% rule” echoes the biblical call to moderation and self-control.
- They move naturally by walking, gardening, and serving. They don’t have gyms, nor rigid routines; they are just living as God designed.
- They gather in close-knit communities called moai, which equate to what my church calls small disciple groups that do life together by sharing meals, laughter, celebrations and life’s trials. It felt like watching the book of Acts where believers “devote themselves to fellowship and the breaking of bread.”
- And the laughter — it’s everywhere. Proverbs 17:22 says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine.” In Okinawa, that verse comes to life daily.
But what moved me most was how generations live intertwined. Elders are not isolated; they’re honored. Children grow up hearing their stories and wisdom. It’s the fifth commandment lived out before my eyes: “Honor your father and mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”
And there it was — God’s formula for long and joyful living. Not in supplements or routines, but in the simplicity of His Word:
- Live with Purpose (Ikigai = Calling)
- Eat as He Created (Steward the body)
- Move as He Designed (Work and walk)
- Belong as He Intended (Community)
- Laugh and Give Thanks (Joy and gratitude)
- Honor the Generations (Legacy and love)
The people of Okinawa may not realize it, but they are living the Biblical blueprint for wellness…body, soul, and spirit in harmony!
At Hands 4Life, we honor God’s design:
pairing young and old, helping people find their purpose-driven life, embracing joy, and restoring the sacred circle of life.
The longer I reflect, the clearer it becomes:
”Longevity is the fruit of obedience. Joy is the fruit of gratitude. And purpose is the fruit of walking with God.”
Okinawa taught me that when we align with the way God designed us to live – physically, emotionally, and spiritually – life not only grows longer, it grows fuller
